Week 6
Week 6: Podcast and Participatory Culture
Podcast- “Food Fight”
We recorded a podcast for class today and decided our subject should be food. One reason we chose that topic was because two of us claim to be picky eaters and the other two, non picky eaters. We also decided that food is one of the most universal subjects, because everybody eats. We discussed what apps and how we find new recipes, what memories cooking has for us and the impact of those times, and the duty we have as educators to challenge students to find and try new things.
Design Principles
From the CLRN Report, the design principle I feel like student podcasts might align is youth Interests. Students are most likely to be involved in and participate in subjects they are passionate about and interested in. As educators, we become positive adult influences in our students' lives and it is important to support and encourage their passions. We should be taking initiative in supporting and learning what they are interested in and foster an environment that positively reinforced these practices and continue to broaden horizons in learning. This can be done by learning about our students, connecting them with mentors who are knowledgeable about the subject, helping them find opportunities in that area, and providing these resources.
Facilitating their podcasting around authentic interests and finding ways for them to publish and share is definitely a way we can sponsor youth interests as teachers. Great points here, Maddie!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your post. I agree with student podcasting being one of the best interests in youth.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I like how you connected this experience with the teacher aspect. We do need to support our students in their choices and motivate them to be who they are and find them ways to interact with others that have their same interests. This activity is a great way for them to sit with others and discuss their thoughts on what they have in common.
